Workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains. Your email chains, that is.

Until recently the best way to deal with the ever-growing mountain of emails was thought to be the concept of “inbox zero”. By clearing emails swiftly and methodically your inbox will never overwhelm you. Well, it was a nice idea.

Now a new concept is taking hold: inbox infinity. Those ever-burgeoning emails? Let them mount up. Don’t feel like answering them? Then don’t. Paul Armstrong of Here/Forth, a technology adviser, said that more people were now practising inbox infinity, pointing to the greater use of out-of-office replies to tell people they may not get an immediate response.
