Kyle Edmund and Johanna Konta will have to overcome a lack of competitive preparation if they are to progress at the Australian Open next week. The respective British No 1s, both former semi-finalists at Melbourne Park, were given stiff first-round tests in yesterday’s draw.
Edmund, the world No 14, will face Tomas Berdych. The former world No 4 from the Czech Republic marked his return from a six-month layoff due to a back injury by finishing as runner-up at the Qatar Open in Doha last week.
