There is a wonderful note in the programme from Hal Prince, the original producer of this 1964 mega-hit Broadway musical. When creating the show, the core team of Joseph Stein (script), Jerome Robbins (choreography), Jerry Bock (music) and Sheldon Harnick (lyrics) would meet every night and, every time, Robbins would ask: “But what is the show about?”

The answer, from the authors, was that it was about a milkman marrying off his five daughters. It was about being a Jew in Christian Russia. At which point, Robbins insisted: “Yes but what is it really all about?” Eventually the answer came. “For God’s sake, it’s about tradition!” shouted Harnick. At which point Robbins cried: “That’s what it’s about. Write that song!”
