Bad news, party people! The Hangoverian age is over. The young (to me, anyone under 40) and the uber-successful no longer burn the candle at any end at all. They do not drink (30 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds are teetotal), go out late, or have sex (especially in Japan), preferring early nights in, drinking botanical-infused waters with their constant companions — their iPhones, of course — curating their Instagram feeds and prepping for the next day, which begins almost before you or I have gone to bed.

This disturbing new trend, which makes almost everyone who needs their full eight hours feel like an under-achieving schlump, has even got a name, Extreme Morning Regimen (EMR) — but I’m calling it Extreme Morning Competitiveness. EMC…
