Along the seafront in Hastings, pretty pastel-painted Victorian houses and garden squares stand next to run-down chicken shops and arcades. In this faded East Sussex town, there are sourdough bakeries, art galleries and mid-century furniture shops for the metropolitan middle classes escaping urban life — known locally as the Filth (Failed In London Try Hastings).
