A former chief executive of Sainsbury’s has backed calls by business leaders for a second EU referendum, saying that the choice for ministers was between a bad Brexit and a disastrous Brexit.
Justin King’s plea came as the Business for a People’s Vote campaign published research yesterday showing that 54 per cent of small and medium-sized businesses and 59 per cent of big ones backed a referendum giving people a final say on the deal struck between Britain and the EU.
Mr King urged more business leaders to speak out, but conceded that bosses of large companies employing many people were in a difficult position in abandoning neutrality on the subject. However, “the vast majority of people see their silence as acquiescence”.
