Prince Andrew has raised eyebrows by appearing to pitch for a new royal yacht as a way of “enhancing” British business opportunities abroad.

The Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997. A suggestion by Michael Gove in 2012 to provide a new yacht “as a gift from the nation” to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee proved deeply unpopular during a period of austerity and was quickly torpedoed.

However, the Duke of York appeared to resurrect the idea in a BBC interview, in which he suggested that a royal yacht could be a useful “tool” to promote the UK.
